The Western Region is the largest region in North Carolina. Its members represent urban and rural areas, including the Cherokee Reservation. The members are dedicated to being leaders in fire and life safety.  

Objectives

1) To coordinate the efforts of it's members in the fields of Fire Education, Prevention and Burn Safety, and by so doing endeavor to provide an efficent uniform Fire and Life Safety Program in North Carolina.

2) To distribute to it's members such information pertaining to Fire and Life Safety Education as may be available; to assit it's members in the solution of and problems which may arise in these fields.

3) To, at all times, assist and cooperate with this association, organizations, goverment agencies, or departments which share our common interest in the education of our citizens in the protection of lives and property from fire and injury.

OLD BUSINESS

OSFM/Safe Kids - Angie Gregg - Safe Cigarette bill passed, and is now to be signed by House. Jan. 10th is the effective date to for all cigarettes to be sold with new paper

 

Fire Team USA is Nov. 14 and 15 in Pinehurst – (campaign for fire sprinklers) – Would be great to have “team” of representatives to come. You can register at www.fireteamusa.com - room paid for. 

 

Two sprinkler associate courses offered at the Aug 23rd Fire Chiefs Conference.  

 

Update/Refresher scheduled in Aug 29th in Gastonia.  You can visit    www.buckleupnc.org  for CEU’s and to get more information.

 

Sam Smith’s idea– logo lapel pins to be made for all FLSE Association members and they are being made right now.

 

Conferences – World Burn Conf.  Oct. 1-4 in Raleigh, FLSE Conf.  Feb 2-6 Pinehurst Inn., Safekids just before it Feb. 1-2.   CPS conference is March 13-18  at Altantic Beach Sheraton.

 

Fire Rescue Commission – (no one present to give update)

 

State Council - David Pruitt – Council met May 9th – OSFM Scholarship recipients need to send letter of intent to Randy Sexton. 

Discussed the 2007 rap-up on conference – silent auction raised over $3000 for burn center! 

2008 conference will have $98 room rates.  The workshops are set.  OSFM will have registration on line in August. The conference committee needs help with door prizes.

OSFM has a new injury prevention person – Jan Parker (central and north eastern)

NC Fireman’s assoc. - new facility in Raleigh (new numbers, 800 number still the same)

 

Jan Parker was voted in as a lifetime member – accepted.

Nov. 14th next meeting will be the councils next meeting.

 

If anyone wants funding from state – they need to go to Randy Sexton – decision made through Council to split money.  We will still have the western scholarship money for the conference. 

 

FF’s Burned Children’s Fund – Tony Jenkins - all reports coming in look good. John Rudisill discussed there are grants to be given out at conference – will have forms online.

 

Several groups/chapters are offering scholarships for kids going to school.

 

Re-cap of Camp Celebrate – it was a smaller crowd then normal, roughly 40 kids.

 

Website update – Terry Malone – if you send in information to put on website, Terry will do his best to post on website.  

 

Several educator classes are coming up.  FLSE I this fall.

Terri Byers volunteered to send out information regarding upcoming classes to the website.

 

FLSE Award of Excellence - deadline to send in nominations is Oct. 15 to regional chairs and Dec. 1 to OSFM. Application will be posted on site closer to date.

 

Monthly reports needed for PPT at upcoming FLSE conference – Terri Byers.   Jan 5th 2008 all reports will be due.  Excel spreadsheet – and photos are proper format.  Thomas Raper is also looking for songs to use with PPT.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

Election of Officers – Rudisill – pres. of nomination committee stated that Kelley

Webb will step up to be Vice Chair and David Watson will step up to be Chair.

Voting takes place for Secretary/Treasurer – running is David Conrad, Lewis Garrison and Mark Dillingham.

 

Plaque for Ryan Cole was presented and accepted by Terry Malone in his absence.  Plaque recognizes Ryan for his years serving as Chair.

 

Terri Byers presents blankets for $35, could be giveaways to presenters at 2010 conference. Everyone agreed to sell at the 2008 conference – and there were some presales.  Deadline for all sales is Sept. 6th.  You can mail check order for blanket written to WNCFLSE Association – to David Conrad, Monroe FD PO Box 69 Monroe, NC 28111

 

What’s happening in your area?
Stanley County FM – fire school in Oct.  a full level of a FLSE level will be offered. 

Kannapolis FD - new division titled Risk Reduction -they are hiring an educator and an    inspector.

Gaston County FM office – should have position for Deputy FM with emphasis on education coming soon.

Iredell county FM in hiring process

Catawba County – Inspection position opening soon

Asheville – 2 new fire stations recently opened

South Fork VFD – new interim chief due to retiring chief.  Wanting to run all levels of FLSE

Lenoir - $37000 grant received for a project with students assisting fire educators  SAFE – using kids to help promote fire service.  . 

 

Angie Gregg –wants to collect more data regarding saves.  Will have an online form to fill out and submit.

 

Sept. is National Emergency Preparedness Month www.ready.gov

 

Votes are counted and there is a tie breaker between Garrison and Conrad – the new secretary/treasurer is David Conrad.
